The Great Northern is housed in the historic Grade II listed Deansgate building, in the heart of Manchester. Originally built as a railway goods warehouse in 1885, the building was latterly redeveloped – for the princely sum of £100 million – as a mammoth leisure complex. Evidence of its past remains, however: ‘Great Northern Railway Company’s Goods Warehouse’ is stamped in white lettering on all four sides of the building. Today the development is home to numerous retail and leisure facilities, including a vintage bowling alley, a casino, a 16-screen cinema and a large Virgin Active gym. The 10-acre site is also thronged with high street shops, cosmopolitan bars and a brace of restaurants, its doors day after day, intent on sourcing the hottest fashions or catching the latest cinema releases. In the evening, the space is transformed; hip venues like Evuna, an authentic Spanish wine house, or James Martin’s restaurant within the Manchester235 Casino, are packed with patrons. Additional features include an elegant landscaped public square, plaza since the Second World War. On-site parking is also available for up to 1,200 vehicles. With its storied history and vibrant attractions, The Great Northern Warehouse is a Manchester institution
